Watch Jed McKeehan, an attorney in Knoxville, in this legal training video as he explains everything you should know when dealing with a jail situation. From the definitions of the terms used to how much you will have to pay in certain charges to who you should contact, you will learn all of it here.
While it’s something you hope to never have to deal with, it will help you fare better if you know how to pay a bond or bail when you find yourself needing to get someone out of jail.
Bail is a certain amount that must be paid for a defendant to get out of jail until the court hearing and sentencing. It’s like a check held by the court in reserve representing the defendant’s assurance that they will appear in court.
If a person cannot pay, they must remain in jail until the set court date.
If you can afford it, you can opt to pay the entire amount required. Even if you are found guilty at the sentencing, you’ll get your full money back if you pay directly to the court.
But in most situations, a bondsman or bond company can help you post bail on the defendant’s behalf. You’ll only have to pay a small percentage of the total amount for the bond, but it will be nonrefundable.
